Claude Managed Agents Alternatives in 2026
Seven alternatives compared on models, hosting, pricing, and data rules
On this page
Claude Managed Agents is Anthropic's hosted service for running agents. You give it a config and a message, and it runs Claude in a sandbox, with tools, sessions, and streaming handled. It launched in April 2026 and is still in beta.
OpenAI, Google, LangChain, DigitalOcean, AWS, and Microsoft all run similar services, and there are open-source platforms you can host yourself. Prices and limits below are as of October 9, 2026.
The Short Version
What a Managed Agent Platform Does
A managed agent platform usually bundles four things:
- A harness. The loop that calls the model, runs tools, and keeps the conversation going. If you want the long version, I wrote about what a harness is and why it matters less than people think.
- A sandbox. The machine where the agent runs commands and edits files.
- Sessions. The agent's saved state, so you can pause it, come back, and keep going.
- Integrations. MCP servers, skills, schedules, and streaming.
They differ on which models they run, where the sandbox and the platform run, how they charge, and where your data is stored.
All the Options at a Glance
What Drives the Cost
Which price matters depends on your model. In Anthropic's pricing example, an hour on Claude Opus 5 costs $0.63 in tokens and $0.08 in runtime. On a small model like Claude Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna, the same tokens cost about $0.01, so runtime becomes most of the bill. Small models can take more tries to finish a task, so compare what a finished task costs.
If your agents wait on people, check what you pay while they're idle. Claude Managed Agents doesn't charge for idle time, and Omnara's managed machines sleep until they're needed. AWS, Azure, and DigitalOcean keep idle sessions running for 15 minutes by default.
Managed Agent APIs From AI Labs
Each lab runs its own harness on its own models.
Claude Managed Agents
Claude Managed Agents only runs Claude (4.5 and later). You can run the sandbox on your own infrastructure, but the orchestration stays at Anthropic, and tool inputs and outputs still pass through Anthropic's control plane. With self-hosted sandboxes, you also have to stage files and GitHub repos yourself.
You pay Claude token rates plus $0.08 per session-hour, and only while a session is running.
It's not eligible for Zero Data Retention or a HIPAA BAA, because sessions are stored server-side.
Choose it if you want Claude, you don't want to operate anything, and you don't need Zero Data Retention, HIPAA, or your own database.
OpenAI's Agents API
OpenAI's Agents API is in public beta. It's the Codex harness, run by OpenAI. Your agent can run in an OpenAI-hosted sandbox, in a partner sandbox like Modal, E2B, or Daytona, or on your own machine with codex exec-server. Either way, the harness itself stays at OpenAI.
Hosted sandboxes are billed per minute at container rates, with a five-minute minimum, on top of model and tool rates.
There's no Zero Data Retention, data residency is US only, and running your own sandbox doesn't change either of those.
Choose it if you use OpenAI models and want OpenAI to run the harness.
Managed Agents in the Gemini API
Google's Managed Agents in the Gemini API is in preview. The harness is Google's Antigravity agent, running in a Google-hosted Linux sandbox, and you define custom agents with AGENTS.md and SKILL.md files.
It only runs Gemini Flash models (Gemini 3.8 Flash by default), and only on Google's infrastructure. Environment compute isn't billed during the preview.
Choose it if Flash models are good enough for your agent and you want to experiment cheaply while the preview lasts.
Agent Platforms on Clouds You Might Already Use
Most of these let you pick the model, the harness, or both.
LangChain Managed Deep Agents
LangChain's Managed Deep Agents is in public beta. It takes LangChain's open-source Deep Agents harness (MIT licensed) and runs it on LangSmith, with durable execution, sandboxes, and tracing. It works with any model.
It's US-only for now, and it's built around a CLI. You can run the Deep Agents harness yourself anywhere, but not the managed runtime around it. LangChain hasn't published a price for it beyond LangSmith's sandbox rates.
Choose it if you already build with LangChain and LangSmith and want to stay in that ecosystem.
DigitalOcean Managed Agents
DigitalOcean's Managed Agents is in public preview, and its preview terms allow only non-production workloads for now. Each session runs in its own Firecracker microVM that can pause, resume, and fork, and you choose the harness: Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Hermes, LangGraph, CrewAI, or your own container image. Models come from DigitalOcean's inference platform, including open-weight models like Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3 alongside Claude and GPT.
Its docs say you pay for the CPU you use, but its pricing page says that's "coming soon" and bills 25% of the vCPUs you allocate until then.
Choose it if you want open-weight models, or you want to run a harness you already like without operating the infrastructure.
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore
AgentCore has been generally available since October 2025. Its Runtime gives each session its own isolated microVM for up to 8 hours, or you can run Instances on EC2 inside your own account for up to 14 days. It works with any model, in or outside Bedrock, and with most frameworks, including Strands, LangGraph, and CrewAI. AWS also added a managed AgentCore harness in June if you don't want to bring your own.
You pay per second for CPU and memory, and CPU isn't charged while your agent waits on the model or tools. A newer, opt-in Runtime costs more per hour but frees idle memory after two minutes. AgentCore is HIPAA eligible.
Choose it if you're already on AWS, you need HIPAA, or you want agents running on EC2 in your own account.
Microsoft Foundry Agent Service
Microsoft's Foundry Agent Service, formerly Azure AI Agent Service, runs prompt agents and hosted agents. Prompt agents are fully managed and have no added charge. Hosted agents are your own container, running in a VM-isolated sandbox per session. It supports Microsoft's Agent Framework, LangGraph, the OpenAI Agents SDK, and the Anthropic Agent SDK, with models from the Foundry catalog.
Microsoft's pricing page doesn't show hosted agent rates yet, so the table above uses its retail price list. Hosted sandboxes top out at 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB, and only Python and C# are supported. A session is deleted after 30 days without activity, along with its files, so an agent waiting longer than that on a person has to start over.
Choose it if your company already runs on Azure and wants agents next to everything else there.
Open Source
The platforms above are closed source, and the vendor runs each service, even when the sandbox is on your machines. An open-source platform can be hosted for you or run on your own infrastructure.
Omnara
Omnara is our product, an open-source managed agent platform that works with any model and any machine. You can use it hosted on Omnara Cloud or run it yourself.
On Omnara Cloud, the platform is free. You can bring your own model keys and machines at no charge, or pay as you go for models and machines from Omnara, with models at the provider's token rates. Idle machines sleep, which stops runtime charges, though a small storage charge continues.
Machines can be your own laptop, VM, or container through a small daemon, or sandboxes from providers like Modal, Daytona, and Blaxel. Agents are saved as event logs in the platform, not on the machine, so a machine going offline or being replaced doesn't end the agent. It also has tool permissions and approvals, Slack, GitHub, and Discord integrations, and team roles.
Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0 and keeps agent history in your own Postgres. You run Postgres, Redis, blob storage, a shared file system, and upgrades yourself.
Choose it if you want to pick your own models and machines without paying for the platform, hosted or on your own infrastructure.
What About Running It All Yourself?
You can also take an open-source harness, like Deep Agents, OpenCode, or Pi, and build the rest around it. For one agent on one machine, that works fine. Once you need sessions that survive restarts, multiple users, permissions, schedules, and somewhere to run untrusted code, you're rebuilding what the platforms on this list already do.
FAQ
Is there an open-source alternative to Claude Managed Agents?
Some are partly open source. LangChain's Deep Agents harness (MIT) and the Codex harness behind OpenAI's Agents API (Apache 2.0) are open source, but in both cases the vendor runs the managed part for you. Omnara's agent platform is open source (Apache 2.0), so you can use it hosted or run all of it yourself.
Does OpenAI have an equivalent to Claude Managed Agents?
Yes. OpenAI's Agents API, in public beta, runs the Codex harness for you, with sandboxes hosted by OpenAI, by partners, or by you.
Which alternatives can run Claude models?
AgentCore, LangChain Managed Deep Agents, and Omnara work with any model, including Claude. DigitalOcean Managed Agents offers Claude through its inference platform, and Microsoft Foundry has Claude in its model catalog. OpenAI's Agents API and Gemini Managed Agents only run their own models.
Can I self-host Claude Managed Agents?
Partly. You can run the sandboxes on your own infrastructure, but Anthropic still runs the orchestration, and tool inputs and outputs still pass through Anthropic. If you need the whole platform on your own infrastructure, you need an open-source platform you run yourself.
What's the cheapest option?
It depends more on the model than the platform. On a frontier model, tokens are most of the bill, so pick a platform that runs the model you want. On a small model, runtime matters more. Omnara has no platform fee, so with your own model keys and machines you pay only your model provider and your machines.
